Rustic, gutsy and an achiever! Well, that's the best way to describe Madhuri Dixit's character in her much-anticipated film 'Gulab Gang'. Sporting bruises on her face and hands in the first look of the film, the actress has sent out the signs of it being a must watch. Directed by Soumik Sen, the film sees Madhuri playing a role inspired by Sampat Lal Devi, who played a key role in fighting for women's rights in UP.
Madhuri Dixit has taken on an action avatar in her forthcoming film Gulab Gang, produced by Anubhav Sinha.
Always known as a dancing diva, Madhuri surprised fans by doing some heavy-duty stunts in the first look of the film released recently.
"This is the first time that Madhuri has taken up an action role. She has been working hard to do most of the stunts without using a double," a source from the film's unit said.
Madhuri plays a character called Rajjo, who forms a group of women vigilante and activists dressed in pink sarees, fighting against injustice in Bundelkhand region.
"She has worked with a team of professionals with whom she has learnt kick-boxing and high kicks moves for the film," the source added.
Madhuri has also undergone training to fight using some rustic weapon. She trained under Shaolin master Shifu Kanishka Sharma for the role. Scripted by Anubhav Sinha and Soumik Sen, the film is a directorial debut of Soumik.
The all-woman's action-thriller musical is loosely based on social activist Sampat Pal. It also casts Juhi Chawla, Mahie Gill, Shilpa Shukla, Tannistha Chatterjee and Priyanka Bose.
Casting::
Initially, actress Tabu was approached to play the lead, but due to lack of funds filming could not be started. Later in April 2012, Anubhav Sinha approached actress Madhuri Dixit for the new film to be made under his home production, Benaras Media Works. The director of the film Soumik Sen also wished to cast Dixit for the lead role and narrated the story to her.Later, Dixit officially announced her part in the film through her Facebook page. Tabu was later approached again to play the second lead role of politician, which actress in turn declined. Sinha and Sen also planned to approach other actresses like Karishma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon for the role of politician, along with Mahie Gill and Shilpa Shukla for other roles. Actress Juhi Chawla was later approached to play the second lead and she eventually accepted the role. Chawla, who debuted in Bollywood through 1986 film Sultanat, will share screen with Dixit, who debuted in 1984 with Abodh, for the first time in their common career span of 27 years.Dixit and Chawla were considered as competitors back in the late 1980s and 1990s. In December 2012, actress Tannishtha Chatterjee was signed to play the member of Gulaab Gang along with two other actresses, Divya Jagdale and Priyanka Bose. The film unit is reportedly looking for a 12-year-old girl to play the fourth member of the gang.
